There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Books! is a great book for the beginning of the school year!  As we start back to school I am doing some “back to school” themed activities.

I recently talked about the school supply themed adapted book series which includes: “Let’s Get Ready for School!”, “What’s on the Desk?”, and “Pack Up the Backpack!”  For more information about those books click here:  School Supply Adapted Books

To continue with my theme, I decided to make some adapted pictures and questions for the There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Books! book to use in therapy this week.  The book is perfect to continue to work on those school supply vocabulary terms and sequencing skills.  I know I have shared some other There Was An Old Lady books and questions but I just really like using these books with many of my small groups.  Print out these free There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed some Books book pictures, sequencing pictures, and visual question sheet.

Here is a quick overview of how to set up the material.  Print, laminate, and cut the book pictures.  I use the smaller book pictures as I read the story.  I add a piece of soft velcro to the book pictures and a piece of hard velcro onto the book page next to each item the old lady swallows.  I laminate and add hard velcro to the blank picture board to store all the book pictures.  This makes it easy to find all the book pictures!

When I start the book, I have the students identify “who” the story is about and attach the “old lady” picture to the cover of the book.

As I read the book, the students find the correct picture to match what the old lady swallows and attaches it to the velcro in the book.  First, the old lady swallows some books.  Have the student find the book picture from a visual field of 2 or more pictures depending on his/her level and attach the first page in the book.

Second, the old lady swallows a pen so the student finds the pen picture and attaches it in the book.  Continue this throughout the book to identify all 7 items the lady swallows, what comes around the corner, and what “popped out” of the old lady at the end of the book.

I take the larger book pictures I laminated to work on sequencing skills.  After the story is finished, have the kids retell the story identifying what the old lady swallowed first, second, third, etc….  For some of my students I give them a visual field of 2 pictures to determine what the old lady swallowed.  For example, I hold up the books and ruler pictures and ask “what did the old lady swallow first?”.  We line up all 7 pictures in the correct order and practice re-telling the story using the visuals.  If you have a white board you could use magnets to hang the pictures on the board.

You can also complete the visual or written questions that go with the book as you read the book or after you finish the story depending on the student’s ability.

If you are looking for some other school supply adapted books check out What’s Bugging You School Supply Themed Adapted books Both series focuses on those school supply vocabulary terms and concepts along with other language skills.  You can learn more information about using these books with your student here:  What’s Bugging You?
