After so much (welcomed) snow this year, I was equally as excited to break out weather and spring activities! This year I created some extension activities and added a surprise egg activity. All have been a hit! Check them out below. What ways can you individualize for your students?
Weather & Spring Vocabulary
With the weather changing each day, it felt appropriate to start some learning around the weather. For all of my weather activities, I used the Weather Mega Pack. I assembled the “Wow, What’s the Weather?” adapted book for a local daycare’s circle time routine. While singing songs about the weather and looking out the weather is fun, the teacher’s wanted some more group interaction. I stored the pieces in a small envelope and the kids were able to come up and match the identical picture. We also would act out some of the weather such as windy, rainy, and stormy. I also took the Spring words board, made two copies and turned it into a matching board for work with teacher time. For my kids still at home, I encouraged parents to go on a scavenger hunt to find some of the actual items like rainboots and an umbrella. This will target generalization of the words! Check out the full Weather Mega Pack for this book and more aligned activities!
Matching Weekly Workbooks: Spring Edition
I am completely obsessed with the matching weekly workbook sets. Of course, I had to pick up the Spring edition and the kids LOVED it. I started 1:1 with a student and before I knew it, I had 5 littles surrounding me for a turn. The vocabulary I heard and the engagement was incredible! A lot of these themed weekly workbooks now come in intermediate and complex levels so check them out! They are excellent in a small group, 1:1, or, if you bind them with just a binder ring, you can separate the pages and use them for independent work.
Surprise Eggs
This year the Dollar Tree had the cutest eggs available. I had to grab the Baby Shark, Sesame Street, and clear chicks and bunnies for my kids. For this activity, I printed off pictures that were preferred to each kiddo, but you could use a theme that you’re working on in your classroom or use the words from the Spring word board found in the Weather Mega Pack! My kids loved opening the eggs to discover what card was inside (2×2 was a great size for the eggs). I heard a lot more imitation and increased engagement just by changing up the activity type to the eggs. You could even put them in a spring basket, and they could take turns choosing one and opening it.
Fine Motor Activities
The last of the roundup are some fun fine motor themed activities. I found these chick and bunny felt sets along with some sticker felt eggs. The felt sets are a little more challenging as the pieces are much smaller and you need liquid glue. The sticker felt eggs were fun but also challenging to get the backing off (but hello communication opportunities)! You could also get two sets of the sticker felt eggs, put one each on half an index card and turn it into a matching game! Not pictured is a foam sticker bunny set that I also snagged for some more spring fun! Happy Spring teaching!
