Winter Themed Learning & Valentine’s Day

Categories: Basic Skills | Winter

Let’s keep the themed, multi-level learning going with these fun Winter and Valentine’s Day themed activities! When I taught in the classroom, I frequently had multi-leveled groups, and using The Autism Helper’s resources were life changing.  I love working smarter,  not harder, and when you can turn one resource into several, I say sign me up!  Check out some of my favorites for winter.

Winter Fun!

Just because the big holidays are over doesn’t mean we can’t continue to offer engaging themed activities!  I have been using these winter vocabulary units in so many ways depending on the goals I’m working on!  First, these vocabulary boards can serve as identical matching activities.  If the current field of 12-15 is too large for your student, feel free to cut them into strips of four or smaller boards such as 4-6 pictures a piece.  You can also take the pieces and put them into a paper bag and pull them out one at a time, holding them up to your face and having your student (or yourself) label them before matching. If you have some of the objects you can also turn this into an object to picture matching activity.  Feel free to bring these into your play area and label items that you have out already!  I also love the Football file folders as there is such an array of levels from sorting to matching! Valentine’s Day Learning Activities

In Infants & Toddlers in the state of Maryland we have an extended IFSP option. At that point we add extended outcomes for literacy and math.  I have several kiddos who are working on counting objects and when I saw this Cupid math book, I knew I had to incorporate it!  I also had some Valentines conversation heart candies to make it extra fun and help with generalizing the concept of a quantity and a number. If your student is not yet working on numbers 5-10 you can simply omit those pages or save them for another time.  I love how all the adapted books have interactive pieces.  You can modify these books in so many ways to scaffold building skills until your student can complete the whole book. You can find this Cupid book here. The next activity I chose was February Bingo for one of my families. This activity includes different levels as well so it’s easily adaptable to multi-level classrooms and families.  You can find the February Bingo here. If you’re looking for more multi-level Valentine’s Day activities check out these fantastic file folders.  Happy teaching!
