Winter break is a special time to bond with your kindergarten-aged children and make lasting memories. This is also when I find myself trying to come up with fun activities to do as a family. I also recommend these to families when they ask for ideas. While the chilly weather might keep you indoors some days, there are plenty of fun, engaging, and educational activities to keep young minds active and entertained. This post will share some ideas you can recommend to families or use in your homes and classrooms!
1. Snowman Crafting Fun
I like to use cotton balls or marshmallows, construction paper, glue, and markers, to create our own snowmen! We also use buttons for the snowman’s eyes, nose, and buttons or small twigs for arms. Using toothpicks to connect the materials has decreased some experienced frustration. I like to ask my kids and students to narrate a story about their snowman.
2. Winter-Themed Story Time
Books about snow, animals in winter, or holiday adventures are perfect for getting into the seasonal spirit. Some favorites for kindergarteners include The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats or Bear Stays Up for Christmas by Karma Wilson. I always recommend asking the child to share their favorite part of the story and talk about what they might do if they were in the same situation
3. Winter Sensory Bins
A sensory bin is a fantastic way to engage your child’s imagination while also offering some hands-on learning. For a winter-themed sensory bin, fill a large container with materials like cotton balls (to mimic snow), ice cubes, and small plastic winter animals. Add small spoons, cups, and tongs to help with scooping and sorting. Encourage your child to talk about what they feel, see, and hear while playing with the sensory bin to boost their descriptive language skills.
4. Winter Nature Walk
Bundle up and head outdoors for a winter nature walk. Even if there’s no snow, winter landscapes are full of wonders: bare trees, animal tracks, and winter birds. Take along a magnifying glass to examine small details, and bring a notebook to draw or write about what you see.
5. DIY Holiday Decorations
Let your child help make holiday decorations for your home. You can create paper snowflakes, garlands made of popcorn or cranberries, or simple handprint wreaths. These crafts are easy and fun for young children, and they’ll feel proud seeing their creations displayed around the house. Use this as an opportunity to teach your child about shapes, colors, and patterns while you craft.
6. Indoor Obstacle Course
On those days when the weather keeps you inside, an indoor obstacle course can be a great way to burn off some energy. Use pillows, cushions, and furniture to create a fun course that your child can crawl under, hop over, or balance on. You can even time them to see how fast they can complete it. If you have multiple kids or friends over, turn the obstacle course into a friendly race for added excitement!
7. Winter-Themed Science Experiments
Kindergarteners love hands-on experiments, and winter is the perfect time to explore simple science activities. Try making “snow” from baking soda and shaving cream, or freeze small objects in ice and let your child explore how they can melt the ice to release the treasures inside. These activities introduce basic concepts of science in a fun and engaging way. Keep the experiments short and sweet, and be sure to encourage your child to ask questions like “What happens when we add more warm water?” to spark curiosity.
8. Building a Winter Wonderland with Blocks
Using building blocks or LEGO, create a winter wonderland scene! Your child can build their own snow-covered mountain, ice skating rink, or even a tiny holiday village. This imaginative play enhances problem-solving skills, spatial awareness, and fine motor development. Encourage your child to narrate their play as they build to develop their language and storytelling skills.
Remember, winter break isn’t just about keeping kids busy—it’s about making memories and nurturing curiosity and imagination. So, bundle up, get creative, and enjoy the magic of the season!
