Leveled Daily Homework is a Staple in My Classroom.

I’ve shared my Homework Mantra before. For me, it’s all about carrying student success at school into the home. If you are looking to implement Leveled Daily Homework into your daily routine, this post is for you! I’ll share how I organize each level of homework, tips for getting homework done, and the differences in the levels.

Print and Go

I print several different levels of the homework. Each level covers an entire school year; you simply print and go! If it’s the start of the school year I take my best guess on where my students will be based on their most recent IEP. From here, I make enough copies for each student plus one or two (I like to keep these on hand incase students move from one level to another) and I’m done for the year. I separate out the levels with file folders and place them in a bin for the year. 

Levels

In my K-2 classroom, I mostly use level 0.5 and level 1 homework.

Level 0.5 is largely tracing, matching, and coloring. It’s perfect for beginning learners.

Level 1 has more complex skills including copying, tracing smaller words, identifying, counting and concepts. 

Getting Homework Done

I use simple take home folders to communicate what needs to be done each night with my student’s parents. It’s simple and effective, which I love. Additionally, it builds so much independence. I start the year off talking to parents about homework and we decide together if it’s something they would like to try. If parents aren’t ready to work on homework at home yet, I just add it to our daily routine as morning work so when families are ready students already know what to expect. If students are struggling, we work together to figure it out together. Here are some of my favorite tips for overcoming homework struggles.
