Summer Series: Increasing Literacy Skills in Children with Autism

Just as the school year winds down and you are thinking you can’t possibly cram one more piece of information

Just as the school year winds down and you are thinking you can’t possibly cram one more piece of information in your head, I’m going to throw a curve ball at you. We’ve got a super, stellar summer series planned for you (I know, #alliterationproblems). It’s jam packed with tons of great info, new videos, and fresh content.

I really think that summer is the best time to delve into an in-depth topic in our field. During the school year, we are always so focused on what’s going on right this minute and what strategies and materials we need for tomorrow – that it’s hard to find the time and energy to learn about the big picture. So take that well deserved break this summer (mentally, emotionally, physically!) but let’s squeeze just a bit of learning in. It’ll be like the bingo game of learning – you won’t even realize you are doing it.

This summer we are going to delve into literacy. This is a huge topic but one that I got loads of questions about and is my mostly highly requested PD. I love talking about literacy. When I started listing out the blog topics for the summer, I almost couldn’t limit myself to 8 weeks. Literacy is not only the ability to read and write. It’s the ability to communicate effectively. It’s the ability to connect and interpret the world you live. It’s the ability to be part of a community. If you can give that gift to your students, there is truly nothing more powerful or important.

We’ve got a lot of ground to cover this summer because the needs of our students are so different. Whether you are a preschool teacher, homeschooling mom, high school inclusion teacher, or clinician, there is a little bit for everyone. We are going to spend the next three weeks reviewing the basics, the foundations, or what I like to call – Emerging Literacy. Then we will spend 3 weeks on Traditional Literacy. And we will end with Functional Literacy and Organization/Planning.

So margarita in hand, let’s get those ideas flowing for next year (in a no stress way). These blog post work well to be read back to back, so when you have a spare hour or so this summer (because we all know, we neeeever have one for those during the school year), check in over at TAH and reading up on why you are going to love teaching literacy next year!

FAQ

Do you accept School POs?

Yes! We are happy to work with school districts to complete orders from our store for individual or groups of teachers. We accept purchase orders, can provide formal estimates, or complete any vendor paperwork you may need to support your district’s purchasing process. Submit a PO to [email protected] or request our W9 to get started!

The Membership gives you continuous access to a growing library of professional development, monthly trainings, resources, and practical tools you can use right away. It’s designed for educators, clinicians, and teams who want consistent support, fresh ideas, and ready-to-use materials all year long.

Courses are focused, start-to-finish learning experiences. Each course dives deep into one specific topic with structured modules, step-by-step instruction, and a clear learning path. You move through the content intentionally to build mastery in that area.

Curriculum Access is a complete, standards-aligned curriculum platform with lessons, materials, data tracking, and implementation tools built for special education classrooms. It helps you actually teach the skills, not just learn about how to teach them.

The resources you purchase are delivered electronically. We will not be shipping any finished products to you – they are all electronically downloadable.

We offer a lot of free information on everything from behavior supports to academic instruction to communication skill building. Start off at our blog, check out our YouTube videos, listen to our weekly podcast, and go in-depth with our free webinars.
