I think it is challenging to work on answering “who” questions so I created this I Spy Community Helpers adapted book to help target this skill. It provides the students with repetition of hearing a “who” question and having to select a person. This book is also great to work on vocabulary terms and learning the names of common community members along with what the person does.
The students have to identify the correct community member who matches the description given a choice of 3 different community members. For example, “I spy with my little eyes…a person who helps put out fires.” The student is given a choice of a cashier, firefighter, and dentist. The student selects the firefighter and places it on the top box.
You can change your level of cueing depending on the student’s level. Sometimes I might narrow the visual field to 2 choices, provide an additional context clue, or even give the name of person along with the clue depending on my student’s skill level. For example, “I spy a person who teachers children.” I might just hold up the chef and the teacher to narrow the visual field for the student.
I also used this book with my students with AAC devices. It worked out really well because the students navigate to the people page on the device which we don’t use very often and almost all the common community helpers were on the different devices. There may be one community member not listed on a specific device but I found for the Nova Chats and Touch Chat systems my students are using had most of the common community members already programmed on the device.
