Last week I shared my seems-more-complicated-than-it-is method of progress and thematic planning. I was happy to hear that many of you plan in a similar way! Feels good to know we are all on the same page, right? Well we wrapped up our penguin unit and jumped right into snowmen. I held off on any thing snowman related prior to Christmas because I felt overwhelmed with the all of the ridiculously cute pinterest inspired Christmas activities to fit in during December. But Santa and Rudolph are packed up so it’s time to enjoy a little snowman loving.
Here are all the fun snowman activities we did in the past two weeks:
Made Shaving Cream Snowmen! Mix shaving cream and glue – it’s super fun and easy. We used googley eyes and dried black beans to jazz it up a bit. 🙂
Another fun messy activity – fake snow!! Love this one. I got this kit from amazon over four years ago and I still have TONS left. Talk about getting your money’s worth – one teaspoon makes a whole bowl full! We played with fake snow, ‘shoveled’ it in and out of bowls, made snowballs, wrote in the snow, and played with action figures in it. Great sensory, fine motor, and creativity all in one!
With my higher kids we also used the fake snow activity to work on adjectives – and explain how the fake snow felt. We did a writing activity revolving around this. We also worked on sequencing. I like using color coding to break down each step for my more visual learners!
I got this awesome freebie from Tales of a First Grade Teacher for a Snowman Glyph. Love this one! And so did the kids – the finished product turned out great. I told them their snowmen would tell a secret message about themselves – they liked that 🙂
We played Say it to a Snowman (my freebie on TpT). My kids really loved this and got into using voices and acting it out!
We did an extension activity of this game by making comics! Download the comic template here!
We read a bunch of snowman books (with plenty of comprehension questions), did some snowman color sheets for color identification, and practiced our counting programs using snowman erasers!
I LOVE the snowman theme! It’s easier to make a little more age appropriate but still find appropriately level materials! Anything fun you do for the ‘snow’ theme?

One question about units…do you do the same units year after year? I noticed your coworker mentioned the science units she does every year…I know this can be tricky as we typically have the same kids for multiple years.
Love the snowmen…what unit is next? 🙂
Sometimes! I kind of mix it up! We are going to do some Valentine’s stuff this week and then finish up everything ‘winter themed’ for the rest of February – too many cute snow themed ideas haha!
