Yesterday I shared my spelling instruction madness. When I was typing it – I realized it sounds a little dry and boring. Do not worry! We still make this fun. We use a bunch of fun spelling games to practice our words of the week. This helps break up the week and allows my students a chance to generalize their learning in a fun way. My guys are competitive and you better believe I am always willing to tap into that in order to get a little extra learning and engagement out of them. Don’t be afraid to. Competition is good.

I love this game called “Show Me” that the reading specialist at our school shared with me. Super easy and quick to make too!

Then comes the fun part. Students fold their paper back up until all of the students are ready. Then comes the darmatic reveal. Get into it. Make it suspenseful. Say, “Shoooooow me flash” and all of the kids whip open their folders to reveal their spelling of the word. They get a big kick out of this. I love that this game focuses on breaking down the word  and can help you to pinpoint where common errors are.
