I created another adapted book series for the month of October.  The series includes “Scarecrow, Scarecrow What Do You See?, “What’s Scaring You” and “Where is the Jack-O-Lantern?”  These will be some fun books to use during the month of October as we start the Fall Season and the students start looking forward to celebrating Halloween.  I always like to incorporate some holiday activities into my therapy because the students like it and it targets some new vocabulary terms.

“Scarecrow, Scarecrow What Do You See?” targets both number concepts and Fall vocabulary.  To set up the book I placed a hard piece of Velco in the 2 squares along the bottom of each page which have no pictures.  For the first page, I placed a piece of hard Velcro in the squares which read “one” and “farmer”.   I added soft Velcro to the back of the numbers and fall pictures and stored them on the grid page.  Then I attached the grid page to the right side of the last page.  Attaching the grid page to the right side of that last page makes it easy to flip out the grid page with all the pictures so the students can select the correct number and fall picture to add to each page as we read the book.

While reading the book, I have the students touch each word square so they can follow along with the book as we read it together.  For this book, the kids have to find both the number and the Fall item that matches for each page.  On each page I also have the kids touch the Fall items as they count each item to work on one-to-one correspondence.  For some of my students, I give them a choice of 2 numbers to pick from if scanning all the numbers is too difficult or they are still working on number identification.

I also ask my students lots of “wh” questions about the Fall items on each page as we read the book.  For example, on the apple tree page I might ask, “what color are the apple?”, “where do the apple grow?”, or “what can you make with apples?” depending on the students’ language skills.  For the hay page, I might ask “what color is the hay?” or “where do you find hay?”.  The students can answer the questions verbally, by pointing, or using a voice output device depending on their expressive language abilities.

Hope your students enjoy counting and learning some new Fall vocabulary concepts.
