Running a self-contained autism classroom means wearing many hats: teacher, behavior support, data collector, communicator, and more. And when you’re short-staffed (which let’s be honest, is almost always), independent centers have truly saved the day.
In my TK-2nd grade class, I rotate students through five independent centers every day. Each one is designed to be low-maintenance for adults but high-impact for student learning and engagement:
Boom Cards

Digital and interactive, Boom Cards are perfect for individualized practice. I use them as an independent center to target IEP goals and give students immediate feedback.
Osmo

This hands-on tech tool builds fine motor skills, problem-solving, and even early math or language skills; all while keeping students engaged with its interactive screen and real-world manipulatives.
Epic on iPads

The Epic app on iPad is my go-to for independent reading. Students can explore books that match their interests and reading levels, with options for read-to-me narration. It’s a quiet, calming center that promotes literacy and builds listening comprehension skills. This cool site can also be used as an independent center on chromebooks if you don’t have iPads.
Task Boxes

My task boxes are pre-taught and clearly labeled with visuals. They focus on fine motor, sorting, matching, and basic academics. The key is routine so students know what to do and feel successful doing it.
Play Center

Play is a huge part of learning! My students practice social interaction, language, turn-taking, and imagination at this independent center. It’s not “just play”…it’s meaningful learning!
I set up each center for success with visual supports, clear expectations, and plenty of student choice. Even with limited staff, my students stay engaged, keep learning, and continue making progress. Thanks for reading!
