In part 1, you learned all about setting up your peer program (if you missed it, check out the post here).  Now to the fun part, adding structure and planning!  Over the years, I have found things that worked well and some that turned out to be more of a Pinterest fail (I know many of us have experienced this). Over the past few years, I’ve found that having a structured routine that was simple and easy to follow made for the best lesson plans.

Peer Structure 16

To start, create a central location for the student and peer.  Having an area where the student and peer can check their jobs, find out who they are working with, and know what to expect each day, adds structure and creates a routine.

Daily Routine and Activity

Each day would start with the same routine:

  • A job within the classroom or building
  • Walk two laps in the gym and take turns with conversation cards (link to these below)

Once the students and peers completed the daily routine, we would do an activity.

Monday – Movement

Mondays were known as “movement Monday.” After completing our daily routine, we would engage in a movement activity, alternating between yoga or a Go Noodle video.

Tuesday – News 2 You

I referred to Tuesdays as “talking Tuesdays.”  Students would learn how to work together as a team, research and summarize a topic, and use communication skills to share out with the class. Students and peers would have an assigned activity (entertainment current event, sports current event, world news current event, weather, joke, and sporting news) to research, summarize, and present the information to the class. I loved using News 2 You for our current event articles.

Wednesday – Leisure Activity

Students and peers would engage in a leisure activity on Wednesdays.  I had a designated area with a list of leisure activities that they could choose from and a shelf that held all the items they needed.

Thursday – Social Skill

Each month focused on a new social skill. Activities such as videos, modeling, and hands-on activities, provided many opportunities for students to learn. As a reference guide, students created social skill notebooks during each unit.

Friday – Board Games

I love board game Fridays! It is such a fun and engaging way for our students to learn many social skills such as waiting, turn-taking, sharing, how to cope with losing, making conversation, problem-solving, compromising, collaborating, and being flexible.
