Trick your students into working on their categorization skills with a game! Categorization is an essential skill that teaches vocabulary, organization, discrimination, and so much more. It’s always more fun working on these skills while playing a game so I created 4 different I Have, Who Has? Category Game sets. Each game set has 24 cards.
To play the game divide up one set of game cards among all the student in the group. So if there are 4 students in the group each student gets 6 cards. I have the students place all 6 cards face-up in front of them so they are easy to see. You might need to go over the cards in front of each student and talk about the different category sets depending on your students’ skill level. Usually I don’t play this game until my students know most of these common categories and it’s more to practice their skills not to teach students about categorization.
The player with the “I have the first card” goes first. For this game set it is “I have the first card. Who has a school supply?” I have all the students look at their cards to find a school supply.
The student with the glue would then say “I have glue. Who has an instrument?” After the student read his/her card I usually have the student turn the card over so we know the card was already used.
The games continues with the student who has the instrument. The student with the guitar would say “I have a guitar. Who has jewelry?”
The next student says “I have a ring. Who has clothing?” The game continues in this manner until all the cards are used.
The final card would read “I have happy. Who has the First Card?” This would indicate the game would start back at the first card or in other words the game is over!
You can play this with different number of students in each group. The other good thing is you can play each game set multiple times because the student will get different cards each time. This game is also good to work on turn taking and social interaction skills with peers. It seems to be more motivating for my students to do something when I tell them it’s a game!
