Essentials For Homeschooling

Categories: Homeschool
When you start homeschooling, having the right tools can help you create a smooth and organized learning space. While your curriculum and teaching style are important, the everyday tools you use also make a big difference. Here are some of my must-haves that can make your homeschooling experience even better.

Laminator

Number one on my list is a laminator. A laminator is an essential tool for homeschooling. You can use it to preserve and protect educational materials. Laminated items are more durable, allowing them to withstand frequent handling, which is particularly beneficial for resources like flashcards, worksheets, and charts that children use repeatedly. You can also use dry-erase markers on laminated worksheets to make them reusable. Laminated materials can be cut and used in hands-on activities, like file folders and task cards.

Paper cutter

A paper cutter is super handy for homeschooling because it lets you cut paper quickly and accurately, making it easier to create educational materials. You can easily prep flashcards, worksheets, charts, and other resources with a paper cutter, giving them clean, straight edges. It’s handy when you need to cut several sheets at once or when you need precise measurements, saving you a lot of time compared to using scissors.

Velcro dots

Velcro is necessary for homeschooling, especially if your kids learn best with hands-on activities. You can use it to create fun, interactive tasks like matching, sorting, or sequencing, which makes learning more engaging. It’s perfect for making things like file folder games or visual schedules where pieces need to be moved around a lot. Plus, Velcro helps keep everything organized and in place, whether it’s securing stuff on a board or in a binder. It’s a simple tool that can make your homeschooling setup more interactive and organized.

Plastic File Folders

File folder activities are a great addition to homeschooling because they provide interactive, hands-on learning tasks that are pre-prepared and stored within file folders, making them easy to set up and put away. They are perfect for reinforcing skills in areas like math, literacy, and problem-solving, as they allow children to practice and review concepts in a fun, engaging manner. Once mastered, you can reuse file folders for independent work tasks.

I like to use poly file folders rather than paper ones to make file folders activities. Laminate for file folders tends to cost more and also requires a laminator that is large enough for file folders. I always had trouble keeping the pieces in place while the materials were going through the laminator and also needed to trim down the file folder to fit the laminate.

The way I do it with the poly file folders makes it so much easier!
First I laminate the materials. I cut out the pieces I need to and I use Elmer’s Craftbond to glue the background pieces on the poly folder. Then I add Velcro and the file folder is ready. My file folders come out beautiful and durable.

Independent Work Center

Having an independent work center in your homeschool is essential because it gives your child a structured space to work on tasks, helping them build focus, confidence, and problem-solving skills. It’s a great way for them to practice routines and learn to work independently, which are important life skills. Plus, it creates a calm, distraction-free environment that can make learning easier for them. While your child is busy with independent work, you can take care of other things or spend time with your other kids, making it a practical setup for homeschooling. I always use tasks that are already mastered so the boys won’t have to ask for help. I also like to rotate them so the boys do not get bored. Some of my favorite independent tasks have been sock matching, silverware sorting, and The Autism Helper Easy Matching Weekly Workbooks.

Having the right tools can truly transform your homeschooling experience, making it more efficient, organized, and enjoyable for both you and your child.
