Creating a Predictable Environment to Decrease Behaviors and Increase Independence

Defining areas in the classroom that serve a specific purpose is crucial for all students.  When you walk into a classroom, the room layout clearly shows what happens at each location.  It is all about creating that predictable environment to help decrease behaviors and increase a student’s independence.  With the proper layout and supports in place, every student will continue to build their independence.

Creating a predictable environment should involve consideration of the following:

Considerations for the Classroom

  • The environment is predictable by arranging materials and furniture to allow for the supervision of all students at all times
  • Materials and furniture are arranged and labeled with clear boundaries
  • Labeling each area with clear boundaries, providing enough space, and ensuring a clear visual understanding of the functional activities that occur in the area
  • During transitions, allowing for spaces to have traffic flow and movement
  • Organize materials and supports in designated areas for easy access by staff and students
  • Label the locations for where materials and supports are stored

Considerations for Students

  • Reduce distractibility by setting up materials and furniture in a way that allows for student focus
  • Allow for appropriate space for each student’s individual needs
  • Reduce or remove visual distractions from the student’s view
  • Create age-appropriate areas – play centers for younger students and leisure/vocational areas for older students

Important Tips and Tricks

  • Train staff and students about each area of the classroom by clearly identifying their roles as both staff and students
  • Continue to observe and reassess the environment to determine any restructuring that staff could implement
