You know what my carb loving self just adores – a good sandwich. During my preggo eatingpalooza I would often indulge in two sandwiches in one sitting. Right about now I am significantly regretting that decision but at the time it was pure heaven. The thing about sandwiches I love are the choices. There is a seemingly endless combination of meats, condiments, veggies, and oh the cheeses. You can create a completely different combination of deliciousness every single time. So let’s tie this back to teaching before I write an entire blog post dedicated to my favorite sandwich combos. A meal that lends itself so much to choices is absolutely freaken perfect for our kids because it packs in the communication. I’m talking getting multiple communicative opportunities right in a row!
When we do a typical community outing to somewhere like McDonalds – our communication opportunities while ordering are limited to the type of burger or chicken nuggets we want, what size fries, and the type of drink. However, when we do a community outing to a sandwich place like Subway or Quiznos – the chances for communication really start to add up! Our students need to select bread type, meat, cheese, toppings, condiments, and it can get even more complicated within each group!
To help assist in all of this communication goodness, I created a Sandwich Ordering Booklet for this exact purpose. The idea this booklet if that you can move along to each page for each question asked when ordering a sandwich. The set of corresponding visuals is on each page with a sentence strip on the bottom to be used for all pages.
If you aren’t feeling a field trip this late in the year (can’t blame you!), hit up the grocery story and have a sandwich party at school! We did that a few years ago and it was a blast. You can mimic the setup of a Subway and have your students order their sandwiches using all of their great communication skills. Getting a sandwich setup to their liking at the end of it all = MOTIVATION!
