Collaborating and Consulting: Tips for Related Service Providers

As the school year starts again, it is important to work closely alongside your school team.  When all team members are on the same page, classrooms run more efficiently and students are well supported throughout the day.  As a related service provider, I drive to various schools during the week.  Since I am not full time in one building, it can be difficult to find the time to collaborate and consult with teachers and staff.  However, with some creativity, I have found some ways to be as effective and efficient as possible even with limited time.  Here are some of my favorite tips for you as you start the school year:

Use Technology Tools to Stay Connected

One of the best things that came out of remote learning was learning all about different video conferencing tools to stay connected.  Many of my teams have weekly team meetings, but I am not always in the building to attend in person.  Zoom and Google Meet give me an option to still participate from wherever I am located.  If you are able to squeeze in a few minutes to check into the team meeting even when you are at another school, it can be very helpful.  My administrators have been very supportive.  You may just have to ask!   If it doesn’t work to zoom into a meeting, you can also ask your administrator or case managers to create a shared agenda that is updated regularly so you can keep in touch with what is being discussed.

Provide Therapy Services in the Classroom

Whenever possible, I try to integrate my services into the classroom, even if it’s just for a portion of the student’s therapy minutes.  I find so much value in spending time with my students in their natural routines.  I can offer tips and suggestions in the moment as well as modeling of different strategies for classroom staff.  When I understand the environment and context my students work within, I can be better at problem solving solutions for various situations that may arise throughout the year.

Create Visual Supports for Important Information

Can’t find the time to train staff on a tool or strategy?  Make a visual!  I have snapped photos and quick videos to share with staff if I’m not able to do so in person.  I find this especially effective for positioning, setup and usage of adapted tools such as a slant board, writing supports or pencil grips.  This way, all staff can have access to the information and can use the pictures as a guide when working with the students throughout the week.  These supports can also be shared with families to keep them informed of what their student is working on in therapy.

With a little creativity, collaborating and consulting with school staff can be easy and effective even if you are not full time in one school building.  What are some of your favorite tips?
