In my last blog post, Dollar Tree Must-Haves: Workbox Edition, I shared the basic items for getting your library of workboxes started and some of my favorite purchases for creating workboxes. If you missed my last post, click here to check it out.
So you have the basics for creating a workbox, but now what? This is where all the fun begins! Get creative and make new workbox tasks for your students. Below are 5 workbox tasks created from Dollar Tree items. Each workbox has a list of materials needed and options for leveling each task (more on this in my video below).
Box 1: Put-in Task (level 1)
Materials needed:
- 1 shoebox
- 9 clothespins
- 1 short rectangular basket
Box 2: Put-in Task (level 1)
Materials needed:
- 1 shoebox
- 10 coins or poker chips
- 1 small container to hold coins or poker chips
- 1 container with lid (cut slit in top)
Box 3: Sort Silverware with Visual (level 1)
Materials needed:
- 1 shoebox
- 1 long rectangular basket
- 1 silverware tray
- 10 plastic spoons
- 10 plastic forks
- 10 plastic knives
- visual for fork, spoon, knife
Level 2: sort silverware without visual
Level 3: sort silverware without visual and roll silverware in a napkin
Box 4: Sort by Color (level 1)
Materials needed:
- 1 shoebox
- 5 short rectangular baskets
- colored notecards (4 colors)
- tape
Level 2: sort by color without visual
Level 3: sort by color and assemble a package with paperclips (package should include one notecard of each color)
Box 5: Sort and Assemble into Bags (level 3)
Materials needed:
- 1 shoebox
- 1 muffin tin
- 1 small storage container with lid
- 8 of each color of pom-pom balls (6 colors total)
- white round stickers
- markers to color stickers
- tape
- 1 picture jig
- 8 Ziploc bags

Leveling
Not all of your learners are going to be at the same level for every task you create. When you are creating workboxes, think about how you can create two or three different levels of the same task. Some tasks may only have one level, but many of the tasks can be extended into more complex activities.
