March is all about math at TAH and I’m proud to introduce a new product available on TAH’s TpT Store…Math Meeting! Math Meeting was created as a highly structured, repetitive daily lesson to teach basic math skills. As I have described in previous blogs, Math Meeting is daily lesson I originally created for my classroom as a more grown-up version of “morning meeting”. Now this product is available to you! Math Meeting includes materials for the board, reference pages, and two versions of the student response page. There are three levels of Math Meeting (1.0, 2.0 and 3.0). I wanted to point out a few features of this new product, so here are five five features you will want to know about Math Meeting…
1. Date Window for the Calendar
One of my biggest pet peeves when I taught primary was when teachers would fill out the calendar to the current date…Calendars are for planning ahead! I needed a way to let students know the current date within the context of the month, so I created a little paper window I stuck around the date of the calendar. I’ve included this tiny innovation in Math Meeting 1.0, 2,0 and 3.0.
Now, I can’t take all the credit for this one…my amazing classroom paraprofessional of four years told me that when she taught the concept of the digital date, students had difficulty with this concept. She suggested color-coding and it was added to Math Meeting 2.0! I also included color-coding for the date in Math Meeting 1.0 and for three-digit numbers in Math Meeting 3.0.
3. Touch Points on Coins
When I taught second grade, the math curriculum I used had a very complicated way of organizing coins in order to determine the values of groups of coins. I was so relieved to discover Touch Math and added the red dots on the coins as a way to start to get students exposed to using touch points on coins. In case you are not familiar, each touch point represents “5” and the line under the penny indicates “1”. So, the quarter has five touch points because it’s worth 25 cents. Students will practice the correct touch point placement on their Student Worksheet in Math Meeting 2.0. In Math Meeting 3.0, students will work on determining the values of coin combinations, with the touch point visuals.
4. Independent Station
Included in all of the levels of Math Meeting are visuals to set up an independent station after students have mastered the Math Meeting during modeling and guided instruction. This is great way to ensure that students maintain the skills learned through Math Meeting and build independence! The independent station includes an independent station page and smaller versions of the reference sheets. Just add copies of the student worksheet and you are ready to go!
5. Leveled Student Worksheet
Each level of Math Meeting comes with two versions of the student worksheet for easy accommodations. In the Math Meeting 1.0 and Math Meeting 2.0, there are student worksheets with or without word boxes. In Math Meeting 3.0, there is a version of the student worksheet with visual cues and one without.
